# Magpie

> Magpie is a browser extension (a Chrome side panel) for collecting images, screenshots, links and text snippets into private boards. It is local-first: boards are files on the user's machine, there is no feed, no algorithm, no ads, and no account is required. Optional paid sync adds other devices and a web app.

## Facts

- The free tier is the complete local product, forever: every capture path (right-click, screenshot-clip, batch image picking, paste/drag, page link cards), unlimited boards and clips, tags, notes, search (including color words and hex like "dark green" or #0f5e68), palette browsing, a file mirror to a real folder on disk, zip export/import, and undo everywhere. No account, no trial.
- AI features (captions, text-inside-images, tag suggestions, search by meaning) are optional and off by default. Free users can bring their own OpenRouter key; paid plans include managed AI with no key or setup.
- Magpie Plus ($5.99/month or $59/year): sync across devices, the web app at https://www.magpie.ee/, managed AI, and 10 GB of storage (~15,000 clips). 14-day free trial, once per account.
- Magpie Pro ($12.99/month or $129/year): everything in Plus with 100 GB (~150,000 clips).
- Privacy architecture: the extension installs with no host permissions (it cannot read pages) and contains no analytics. When syncing, data travels encrypted and the local copy remains the source of truth. Cancelling keeps every local file; the cloud copy becomes read-only and is retained for twelve months.
- Deleting is undo-able rather than confirmed, and deleted means deleted: bytes are hard-removed after the undo window.
- Platform: Google Chrome (side panel). Other Chromium browsers with side-panel support may work but are not tested.
