What mymind does well.
mymind made calm, private saving a category. Everything you throw at it is auto-tagged by AI — no folders, no filing, no manual anything — and it reads the text inside your images. It has polished apps beyond the desktop, and its paid tiers add reading mode, article backup and AI summaries for people who save a lot of writing. Its privacy stance is real: no ads, no data sales, no tracking-for-profit.
If you want a zero-effort visual memory that follows you everywhere and you're happy for it to live in someone else's cloud, mymind is a lovely product. This is not a teardown.

Magpie's premise is that a collection you'll keep for years should not depend on anyone's servers — including ours. Privacy here isn't a promise in a policy; it's an architecture you can check.

Who should stay with mymind.
Choose mymind over Magpie if any of these are you: you collect mostly on an iPhone or iPad (Magpie has no iOS story yet); you want zero organizing, ever — no boards, no tags, AI does all of it; you save long articles and want reading mode, backups and summaries; or you simply don't use Chrome. Those are real advantages, and pretending otherwise would be bad marketing and worse manners.
Choose Magpie if you want your collection to be yours in the file-system sense — free on your machine for as long as you keep it, synced only if you choose, with AI as an option rather than a dependency.

Is Magpie really free, or free like a trial?
Free is the whole local collector, forever — every capture path, unlimited boards and clips, color search, the file mirror, zip export. No account, no trial clock. Paid plans exist for one reason: sync across devices, the web app, and managed AI.
Can I import my mymind collection?
There's no one-click mymind importer yet. Anything you can save out as files can be dragged into Magpie in batches, and Magpie's own zip format imports and merges cleanly. A dedicated importer is on the list.
Does Magpie do AI tagging like mymind?
Yes, optionally — and it's off by default. Turn it on and Magpie titles your captures, reads the text inside screenshots, suggests tags from your own vocabulary, and matches searches by meaning. Bring your own key for free, or let a paid plan run it with no setup.
What about my phone?
Magpie lives in Chrome on the desktop. On Android, paid plans can share from any app straight into Magpie via the web app at magpie.ee. iOS isn't covered yet — if your collecting happens mostly on a phone, mymind is honestly the better fit today.
